Trade between Europe and America Achieves a Record: Who Paid the Price?

Trade between the European Union and the United States was at a record high in 2025. The growth in EU-US trade highlights the deepening economic ties between these two global partners. In fact, EU US trade has reached unprecedented levels recently.

This is according to a study issued by the German Economic Institute (IW).

The value of goods trade amounted to about 875 billion euros, despite the continuation of customs duties between the two sides, which is a strong sign of the resilience of EU US trade.

The study showed that EU exports to the United States increased by seven percent, to 580 billion euros.

European imports from the United States also increased by two to two percent, to two hundred and ninety-five billion euros.

This resulted in a European trade surplus of two hundred and eighty-five billion euros.

Despite these findings, the study confirmed that the picture is not entirely positive. Challenges still exist for EU US trade partners.

It pointed out that a number of European companies accelerated their exports before the implementation of the new tariffs, which contributed to raising the numbers temporarily.

The German automotive sector was the hardest hit.

European auto and parts exports to the U.S. market fell 20 percent to 4 percent.

Germany’s exports alone fell by eighteen percent by nine percent.

Ireland, in contrast, has seen a significant jump in its exports to the United States, driven by the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors.

Italy, Denmark, Finland and the Czech Republic also recorded mixed growth in their exports.

Trade in services between the two parties reached a record 865 billion euros. Therefore, EU US trade now encompasses both goods and services at record levels.

However, the EU has recorded a deficit in this sector, as a result of higher payments for software licenses and intellectual property rights to US companies.

The study concluded by emphasizing the need to avoid any further escalation in tariffs, as continued trade tension will increase uncertainty and affect trade and investment on both sides of the Atlantic.
