The Municipality of Baalbek, in coordination and cooperation with the Baalbek Traffic Detachment, has launched a new traffic plan.
The plan aims to ease traffic congestion in the commercial city centre and regulate traffic in both directions.
Mayor Ahmed Zuhair al-Tufaili noted that “the plan does not include fundamental amendments.”
Rather, it is based on the introduction of limited changes that will improve the flow of the road.
He added: “The success of this plan depends primarily on the commitment of citizens to it. Additionally, it depends on the response of traders and owners of establishments to the approved mechanism.”
He continued: “Especially in terms of parking citizens’ cars in the free parking lot in Manshiyya next to the archaeological site. Or in the semi-free public parking lots in the city.”
He stressed that customers and visitors to the city should be allowed to stop for minutes in front of shops in order to shop. This should happen in places marked as “momentary parking”.
“The changes to the previous traffic plan are few, but substantial,” he said.
He said: “The main change in the plan is that Mar Girgis Street, which extends from Tala’a Hotel Palmyra to the hostel of Al-Ajami Restaurant, will be turned into an entrance only. It will be in one direction.”
He stressed that there will be stricter control of traffic violations. This is as opposed to walking or stopping in prohibited places, or double parking that obstructs traffic, in all Baalbek markets.
