The Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve, in cooperation with the National Council for Scientific Research and the Higher Institute for Doctoral Studies at the Holy Spirit University – Kaslik, organized a national workshop on environmental conservation priorities. This workshop focused on environmental conservation priorities in Lebanon.
The workshop was attended by the heads of northern municipal unions and mukhtars. In addition, representatives of environmental associations and entities concerned with natural resources management were present.
At the beginning, the director of the Horsh Ehden Reserve, Eng. Sandra Al-Koussa Saba, welcomed the attendees at the “Reserve House” in the Jouit spring.
The reserve is a home for all
“The reserve is a home for everyone who is fluent in the language of the environment and believes in the importance of protecting and preserving nature,” she said.
“This project is a model for fruitful cooperation between institutions.
Integration is a key pillar
“This integration between institutions is a key pillar for the success of the project and the achievement of applicable scientific results,” said Koussa-Saba.
The Mayor of Zgharta-Ehden, in his capacity as Chairman of the Committee of the Ehden Forest Reserve, Eng. Byaru Zakhia Douaihi, delivered a speech in which he welcomed the participants.
Cooperation between municipalities
He noted the importance of this national meeting. Furthermore, he highlighted its role in enhancing cooperation between municipalities and scientific and environmental institutions.
This was followed by a speech by Prof. Nabil Nimr. In his speech, he stressed the importance of “this workshop, which is the first of its kind at the national level”.
The opening remarks concluded with an intervention by Dr. Carla Khater, representative of the National Council for Scientific Research. In her speech, she addressed the importance of the workshop.
Afterwards, Prof. Nabil Nimr gave a scientific and technical presentation. He discussed the various globally approved conservation tools and their applicability in Lebanon.
Review of Scientific Methodology
He reviewed the scientific methodology adopted by the research team at the Holy Spirit University – Kaslik. This was to determine the priorities of conservation.
The presentation addressed Lebanon’s reality in achieving the global goal as well as introducing effective space-based conservation measures.
Interactive Panel Discussion
The workshop concluded with an interactive discussion session. During this session, participants asked many questions and inquiries about different types of protection, especially model forests.
Participants, in particular mayors and heads of municipal associations, have shown great interest and enthusiasm for the follow-up to this project.
Project Continues
It is noteworthy that the work of the project will continue during the next phase. This will occur through a series of bilateral meetings with mayors, mukhtars and concerned authorities.
Promoting diversity conservation
This reflected the great interest in this national track. The track is aimed at promoting the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable management of natural resources.
