The Institute of Art in the Arab World at the Lebanese American University (LAU) inaugurated the exhibition “Marie Al-Khazen, a Lebanese Pioneer of Photography”.
In cooperation with the “Arab Image Foundation” and the “Arab Women’s Institute”.
The exhibition was opened by Isabel and Philippe Helou in the exhibition hall of the Faculty of Architecture and Design building. This took place on the Beirut campus.
Sixty photographs
In addition, the exhibition included more than sixty photographs from Mohsen Yamin’s collections.
Many of them were therefore exhibited in Lebanon for the first time.
Testimonies Opinions Seminar
A dialogue seminar was held. Testimonies and opinions of personalities and experts contributed to bringing Al-Khazen’s work back to the forefront.
The panelists spoke about the importance of Al-Khazen’s work. Its legacy has been going on for more than a century.
Discussions about photography
It sparked debates about photography, gender, identity, and modernity in Lebanon.
In addition, these photographs inspired research and questions about the personality and performance of this exceptional woman.
She was carrying a camera in those days.
Dr. Taan moderated the symposium and gave her testimony on the nature of the cultural relationship she had with Al-Khazen’s photographs.
Fouad Al Khoury also addressed the works of Al-Khazen. He listed them as part of the preservation of visual history throughout the region.
He considered that the photos carry stories that go beyond the boundaries of the families themselves, describing them as rare.
As a result, the exhibition was an invitation for visitors to explore the world. It included many beautiful and rare photographs.
She pointed out that one of the most prominent exhibits in the exhibition is the image of “Two Women Disguised as Two Men”. This is one of the most famous photographs of Al-Khazen.
This resulting exhibition is the result of years of study, collection, conservation and creative engagement by researchers, writers and artists.
Finally, LAU’s commitment reflected the development of research, culture, and dialogue on Arab art and heritage.
