“Ab al-Lahab” Drives Electricity Consumption to Record Levels
With the arrival of “Ab al-Lahab,” electricity consumption in Lebanon has reached exceptionally high levels.
The intense summer heat has pushed homes, businesses, restaurants, cafés, and other venues to rely heavily on air conditioners. As a result, electricity demand now exceeds the levels usually recorded during normal seasons.
At the same time, Lebanon is welcoming large numbers of tourists and expatriates for the summer season. Their arrival has further increased electricity consumption across the country.
Therefore, officials in the energy sector are working to secure enough fuel oil for Lebanon’s power plants. Authorities are focusing particularly on importing new fuel shipments to meet the growing demand.
Meanwhile, concerns have increased over a possible shortage of fuel oil. Such a shortage could lead to a nationwide blackout and threaten both public safety and the summer tourism season.
However, sources at Électricité du Liban reassured the public through Al-Markazia.
According to the sources, a ship carrying 35,000 metric tons of fuel oil will arrive next week. They also confirmed that tax revenues have secured the necessary funding for the shipment.
In addition, public administrations and institutions are expected to begin paying their outstanding debts to Électricité du Liban within the next 8 hours and 40 minutes.
The sources explained that these payments will help the corporation continue financing future fuel shipments.
“As long as government agencies and public institutions pay their outstanding debts, we can secure fuel shipments sustainably and without major obstacles,” the sources said.
Consequently, these measures should help Lebanon avoid a total nationwide blackout during the peak summer season.
