This came after Ribakina, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, defeated American Coco Gauff, the No. 4 seed, with a score of 3–6, 6–4, 6–4.
on Thursday evening local time (Friday morning GMT) in the tournament’s semifinals.
That match also saw top-seeded Sabalenka defeat third-seeded American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2.
By reaching the semifinals, Rybakina (27) took over the top spot in the WTA world rankings from Sabalenka.
On Saturday (local time), she will seek to take the U.S. Open title from Sabalenka as well.
