IMF and Lebanon: a step toward a support agreement

The International Monetary Fund has announced plans to send an official mission to Lebanon during the month of November.

The visit aims to continue discussions on ways to support the Lebanese economy and move toward a support program agreement, according to Reuters.

Athanasios Arvanitis, deputy director of the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department, said that “the talks held recently in Bangkok between Fund officials and Lebanese authorities were good and productive,” affirming that “intensive communication will continue in the coming weeks in preparation for the visit.”

The discussions focused on “restructuring the banking sector, restoring Lebanese citizens’ trust in the financial system, and establishing mechanisms to return public debt to a sustainable path.”

The Fund stressed that “reaching an agreement requires accelerating structural reforms, foremost among them bringing the law addressing the status of banks into effect.”

This includes passing legislation to address the financial gap in line with international standards, alongside preparing the 2027 budget and a medium-term fiscal framework.
