Wall Street indexes opened Wednesday’s trading session lower.
This came after US inflation exceeded market expectations, while investors weighed earnings results from major banks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.16%, losing 85.11 points, to reach 51,584.99 points.
The S&P 500 also declined by 0.40%, or 31.3 points, settling at 7,774.18 points.
Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite lost 172.7 points, or 0.63%, to reach 27,031.64 points, according to Reuters.
These movements came after the US Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% year-on-year in September, compared with expectations of 3.6%.
At the same time, core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose 2.6%, surpassing estimates of 2.5%.
The data reinforced expectations of interest rate hikes, as energy and fuel prices continue to weigh on inflationary pressures.
Meanwhile, investors are tracking bank earnings in search of indicators that could help them assess corporate performance and identify new investment opportunities.
Monetary policy remains a key focus for markets, as investors weigh inflation developments against corporate results before determining their next moves.
They are also watching for signals from the Federal Reserve on the direction of interest rates, given their impact on borrowing costs and stock valuations in the period ahead.
