The Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Rima Karami, held an extensive virtual educational consultative meeting to discuss the fate of the high school exams in Lebanon.
The meeting came after the recommendation of the parliamentary education committee and the decision of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to postpone the date of the first round of exams.
Educational officials and representatives of private and public schools participated in the meeting.
Divergent opinions on official exams
The meeting lasted more than three hours. Participants reviewed the conditions that affected the school year.
Opinions varied between the demand for the cancellation of the official exams and their conduct according to the flexible mechanism approved by the Ministry of Education.
Suggestions were also made to postpone exams or adopt elective tests for students.
Minister Karami confirmed that she will study all proposals in preparation for submitting an integrated vision to the Council of Ministers.
It should be based on the principle of educational justice and taking into account the situation of students.
Student safety is a priority
The Minister of Education stressed that the security situation and the safety of students constitute a red line.
She pointed out that the government adopted an exceptional mechanism that included holding three rounds of exams, and reducing the curriculum to lessons completed before March 1.
At the end of the meeting, the Minister asked the participants to submit their suggestions and alternatives, with the aim of reaching solutions that preserve the rights of students and lead to the holding of high school exams in Lebanon.
