The dissertation by Lebanese University graduate Nada Najib Saliha shared the Arab Women’s Organization Award.
It was recognized as the best doctoral dissertation in the Arab world on women, alongside the dissertation by Dr. Dina Ibrahim Hassan from Egypt.
Dr. Salha—a graduate of the Institute of Social Sciences—defended her dissertation at the Higher Institute for Doctoral Studies in Arts and Humanities.
It is titled “Women in the Lebanese Educational Curriculum: A Comparison of Content and Delivery—A Case Study of Arabic, English, and Education in Beirut’s Public Elementary and Secondary Schools.”
The thesis, which won the Arab Women’s Organization Award, analyzed eighty-seven textbooks.
The findings revealed that the curricula practice severe, repeated, and deliberate gender discrimination against females in the composition committees and their responsibilities,
This is evident in the titles of texts, images, illustrations, tasks, roles, professions, and occupations.
The findings concluded that the curricula perpetuate symbolic male-dominated violence against women and their portrayal.
They also reproduce the traditional image of women, passed down through generations, in the minds of the younger generation.
