The Lebanese Olympic Committee officially announced Lebanon’s delegation for the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy. The Games will run from August 21 to September 3.
This year, 26 countries will take part in the event. Nearly 4,000 male and female athletes will compete across 33 sports.
The Lebanese Olympic Committee announced the delegation during a press conference at its headquarters in Hazmieh.
Committee President Dr. Boutros Jalakh attended the event alongside his deputy and head of the delegation, Jacques Tamer. In addition, sports officials, federation representatives, and athletes attended the conference.
During his speech, Jalakh highlighted the importance of Lebanon’s participation in international sporting events.
Moreover, he explained that the committee worked closely with sports federations to select the athletes. The selection followed the required technical standards.
Jalakh also expressed hope that Lebanese athletes would achieve strong results. In particular, he hopes to see the Lebanese flag raised on the podium.
Lebanon has a strong history at the Mediterranean Games. Until the 2022 Oran edition, Lebanese athletes had won 75 medals.
The total includes 10 gold medals, 23 silver medals, and 42 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Lebanon will compete in 12 sports at the Taranto Games. These include wrestling, fencing, triathlon, weightlifting, archery, and swimming.
Lebanese athletes will also compete in gymnastics, judo, shooting, taekwondo, track and field, and table tennis.
Finally, delegation head Jacques Tamer encouraged the athletes to represent Lebanon in the best possible way. He also called on them to show sportsmanship and responsibility throughout the Games.
