From Awareness to Action. Obesity in Lebanon between Health Challenges and Integrated Support

Beirut witnessed the holding of a national dialogue entitled “From Awareness to Action” on weight management in Lebanon.

The dialogue was organized by Novo Nordisk in cooperation with the Lebanese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Lipidology.

Doctors, psychologists, nutritionists, and representatives of official authorities participated in the dialogue.

Obesity is a complex health condition

Participants emphasized that obesity is not just the result of unhealthy eating habits or lack of willpower, but rather a complex health condition that is influenced by multiple biological, hormonal, genetic and environmental factors.

One-third of adults in Lebanon are obese

It is estimated that about a third of adults in Lebanon, one in three people, are obese.

This problem affects more than one billion people around the world.

Early intervention to develop treatment plans

The President of the Society, Dr. Hajar Ballout, explained that early intervention and seeking medical advice help in developing individualized treatment plans that support health and quality of life.

The dialogue discussed the impact of weight-related social stigma, which may prevent many from seeking timely health help.

The President of the Syndicate of Psychologists, Dr. Raja Makki, also stressed that weight management in Lebanon, empathy and continuous support are an essential part of the treatment journey.

The Vice President of the Nutritionists Syndicate, Dr. Natalie Yaghi, stressed the importance of adopting small, achievable goals rather than abrupt changes, taking into account the needs of each individual in particular.

Experts pointed out that tackling obesity requires collaboration between the health sector, schools and communities to promote healthy habits and encourage physical activity.

Participants concluded that weight management in Lebanon is an ongoing journey towards a “lighter” and healthier life.

Medical, psychological and nutritional support is available to anyone who wishes to take the first step towards a healthier future.
