Foods That Promote Longevity: Here Are the Details

A new dietary study, involving more than 177,000 people in the United Kingdom,

revealed that preferences for certain foods may be linked to longevity or an increased risk of death.

The researchers asked participants about their favorite foods, rather than asking them to recall what they had eaten during a specific period.

The results showed that carbonated soft drinks topped the list of choices associated with a shorter lifespan, with a 38% increased risk of death.

Diet soda followed at 23%, then sugar-sweetened tea at 22%, corn chips at 20%, and whole milk at 18%.

In contrast, a group of healthy foods was associated with a reduced risk of death.

Extra virgin olive oil was associated with a 33% reduction, while asparagus and broccoli were associated with a 31% reduction, black pepper with a 28% reduction, butternut squash with a 25% reduction, and eggplant with a 21% reduction.

The list of longevity-promoting foods also included whole-grain bread, spinach, salad, onions, mushrooms, lentils, beans, and bell peppers.

These options are rich in fiber and beneficial nutrients.

The study supports the importance of the Mediterranean diet, which is based on vegetables, whole foods, and olive oil.

It supports heart and brain health, helps with weight management, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases.
