Beirut City Council member Brigadier General Mahmoud Al-Jamal oversaw the rehabilitation and installation of traffic lights across several streets in the capital.
Al-Jamal said malfunctioning traffic lights are among the main causes of Beirut’s traffic congestion.
To address the problem, Beirut Municipality launched a comprehensive campaign to repair damaged traffic lights. The municipality will also replace damaged poles, cables, and electrical wiring.
According to Al-Jamal, most traffic lights in Beirut are currently out of service. Some have also suffered damage or theft.
Rehabilitation work began about a week ago in the Al-Nahr–Al-Badawi area. Crews then moved through downtown Beirut and Ashrafieh.
The project also reached the Furn al-Shabak–Badaro intersection and Sami al-Saleh Street. Work will continue toward the Museum and Adliya areas.
As part of the rehabilitation, crews are replacing damaged poles and installing new wiring.
Al-Jamal stressed that the campaign will continue until crews repair every malfunctioning traffic light in the capital.
The first phase is expected to take around five weeks. After its completion, traffic lights in the covered areas should return to full operation.
Meanwhile, the second phase will include Hamra, Corniche Al-Mazra’a, Qasqas, Barbour, and Al-Mseitba.
Project lead engineer Pierre Hakim explained that the team will also coordinate with private generator owners.
This cooperation will provide an alternative power supply during electricity outages. As a result, traffic lights can continue operating even when the public power supply is interrupted.
