The Regional Ministry of Culture announced the discovery of one of the largest preserved sections of an ancient Pomor ship’s hull.
The ship, constructed using traditional techniques involving wooden dowels, was found in the city of Arkhangelsk in northern Russia.
The artifact was discovered during excavations conducted by a team from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences at a fountain site in front of the Sports Palace.
The artifact was subsequently transferred to the Northern Maritime Museum, where it will undergo conservation and restoration.
The discovered artifact consists of wooden planks between six and seven centimeters thick and approximately twenty-three centimeters wide, joined together with dowels.
Preliminary examination showed that the wood
was not sawn but split using wedges
The resulting pieces were then shaped with an axe, a technique common in traditional shipbuilding.
The dimensions of the planks suggest that the ship may have been about 25 meters long.
Experts believe the ship likely dates back to the 17th century.
The discovery is of great significance to researchers in the field of Pomor ship reconstruction, as it provides a real-world model for studying the ancient construction methods and techniques used
by the inhabitants of Russia’s northern coast.
The museum is currently working to preserve the artifact and carry out preliminary
restoration before displaying it in its permanent exhibition
