Power Outages in Algeria: On Wednesday night, several regions in Algeria experienced disruptions and power outages
amid a severe heat wave that drove energy demand to unprecedented levels.
The Algerian Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energy reported that a technical malfunction occurred at an electrical facility in the Sidi Aqba area of the province of Biskra.
This affected the power supply in a number of provinces, while teams from the “Sonelgaz” complex began operations to gradually restore service.
This disruption occurred as the national power grid recorded high levels of consumption.
Due to the intensive use of air conditioners and cooling systems amid persistently high temperatures and humidity in several regions of the country,
Algeria recorded a new peak in electricity demand of approximately 22,000 megawatts at 3:30 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Energy.
This marks the second record high recorded since the start of the current summer season.
Algerian authorities are counting on expanding production capacity and strengthening transmission and distribution networks.
This is to keep pace with the continuous rise in electricity demand, especially during peak summer periods.
