The Lemur’s Song Reveals an Amazing Secret

In the forests of Madagascar, the “Indri” lemur sings loud songs that echo through the trees.

A recent study revealed that this animal may use a vocal technique similar to that of an opera singer to project its voice over greater distances.

Reuters published the findings on September 21, 2026.
Researchers analyzed 83 video recordings of 19 indri living in the wild.

They observed that these animals open their mouths wider as the pitch of their songs rises.

This change helps amplify the sound and carry it through the dense forest, in a manner similar to what some sopranos do.
Indri use their songs to mark their territories, and the sounds also help them communicate with members of their group.

The discovery gives scientists a deeper understanding of animals’ communication abilities and provides a new reason to focus on protecting this endangered species and its natural habitat.
