Salam: Public transport is the gateway to recovery

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam affirmed that developing public transport in Lebanon is a cornerstone of economic recovery, social justice, and balanced development. He made the remarks while presiding over a meeting titled “Towards Developing Shared Transport in Lebanon” at the Grand Serail.

The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme, with the participation of Minister Fayez Rasamny.

Easing the burden on families

Salam explained that the sector’s crisis predates the financial collapse, stemming from war damage and delays in implementing plans. As a result, reliance on private cars became entrenched, before the financial crisis further increased the burden of transportation on families.

He noted that the World Bank had estimated the cost of the transport crisis, about ten years ago, at more than $2 billion annually. These losses include time lost in traffic congestion, declining productivity, and the rising cost of moving people and goods.

He also stressed that improving public transport boosts purchasing power, expands job opportunities, and facilitates access to education and healthcare.

A regular network and reliable service

Salam called for a modern network linking Lebanese regions, with an increase in buses and routes within and between cities. He stressed the need for punctual schedules, clearly defined routes, fair fares, safe stations, and continuous maintenance.

He also called for taking into account the needs of the elderly and people with disabilities, and for dedicating bus lanes where roads allow. He concluded that investment in public transport improves productivity, health, and the environment, and ensures citizens can move safely, with dignity, and at a reasonable cost, saving them money and time in their daily lives.
