On the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Rima Karami issued a statement affirming that education is a right that wars cannot take away.
In a message marking the occasion today, September 9, she stated that “education is not a target in war, nor should it be its price.”
She emphasized that “protecting schools, students, and teachers, and ensuring safe access to education and the continuity of learning, is not the responsibility of the Ministry of Education alone.”
Rather, it is the responsibility of the state and the international community.
She called for “respect for international law and holding those responsible for violations against educational institutions, learners, and staff accountable.”
Minister Karami affirmed that “the continuity of education in times of crisis is not a luxury.”
Rather, it is part of protecting the child themselves; the school’s location may change, and the class may move.
A child may be forced to flee, but the child’s right to education must remain unchanged.
She concluded by emphasizing that “protecting education does not mean merely protecting a building, but protecting children, teachers, and society, and its ability to recover and build a future after the war ends.”
