A new achievement for Dr. Jamil Barji, a native of the town of Amion and a surgeon who serves as chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Tulane University in New Orleans.
He has been awarded the “Dr. Elias S. Hanna Endowment Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery”—a prestigious endowed academic position granted in recognition of scientific and professional excellence.
This is a significant and well-deserved achievement that adds to the record of doctors from Koura and the Lebanese diaspora.
It is noteworthy that the chair itself is named after a physician of Lebanese origin, Dr. Elias Hanna.
He graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1963 and established the chair through a personal donation to support medical education and surgical excellence.
It is worth noting that Dr. Barji, a native of Ammoun in Koura, is a graduate of the American University of Beirut’s School of Medicine (2004).
He trained at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and the University of Washington in Seattle.
In 2018, he returned to Lebanon, where he performed the country’s first double lung transplant.
He also performed the first pulmonary artery endarterectomy.
He also helped establish a surgical program for advanced lung diseases at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.
This honor recognizes his exceptional contributions to cardiac and thoracic surgery, the management of advanced heart failure, and mechanical circulatory support.
