Good news for Lebanese: Will the energy minister succeed?

Despite the global crisis, could Lebanon’s fuel crisis ease?

After a series of public protests, and amid worsening living conditions partly linked to regional developments, the energy minister is preparing to make an important decision that could bring good news for the Lebanese people, if he succeeds in convincing the Cabinet to approve it.

Minister of Energy and Water Joe Saddi wrote on X:

“Today’s priority is the citizen and their ability to bear the burdens, and they should not be made to shoulder more given the sharp rise in global oil prices and its local repercussions.

That is why I will ask, at Thursday’s Cabinet session, to cancel the 300,000-lira fee on fuel, or at the very least suspend it, especially since we objected to it from the start.

What is needed today is to ease the burden on citizens.”

This comes as the wage index committee, which met under the chairmanship of the labor minister, raised the transportation allowance to the equivalent of seven hundred thousand lira.

The meeting also decided to increase monthly family allowances, while discussions will continue in an effort to reach agreement on the minimum wage.
