The Portuguese national team kicked off its UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1-0 home win over Wales.
It was their first official match under new head coach Jorge Jesus. João Félix sealed the victory with a shot from outside the penalty area in the 22nd minute.
This gave the defending champions their first three points in Group 4.
The Portuguese national team dominated for long stretches of the match.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruben Dias came close to scoring before Félix’s goal, but Wales kept their hopes of a comeback alive.
Toward the end, Brennan Johnson nearly equalized, but his shot hit the crossbar, and then Diaz cleared another chance in front of the goal.
This victory gives Jesus a positive start to his tenure as Roberto Martínez’s successor, following Portugal’s exit in the round of 16 at the last World Cup.
Portugal will face Norway on Sunday, while Wales will visit Denmark in the second round.
