The Lebanese Association for Sustainability and Social Responsibility (LASSR), in cooperation with MUBS University, organized a cultural meeting to promote a culture of nonviolence at the university’s Aley branch, marking International Nonviolence Week.
The meeting was titled “Social Responsibility and the Culture of Nonviolence: A Partnership for Local Peace.”
It brought together academic, social and municipal figures, along with students and representatives of local institutions.
The association’s secretary, Dr. Firas Zeidan, opened the discussions by affirming that peace is a daily practice built on dialogue, respect and justice.
He also stressed the importance of translating knowledge into practical initiatives that serve the community.
The meeting included a presentation prepared by Rita Ziade on contemporary violence and its relationship to human beings and technology, as well as the role of scientific research in understanding transformations and raising awareness.
For her part, Dr. Ogarit Younan addressed nonviolence as a human and strategic choice for building peace, emphasizing the role of youth and educational institutions in establishing it.
The association’s president, Dr. Ramona Daneff, linked peace to sustainable development, stressing the need to confront poverty and marginalization and to foster acceptance of others.
The head of the Permanent Peace Movement, Dr. Fadi Abi Allam, also called for addressing conflicts through dialogue and respect for rights, and for countering hate speech.
In closing, the chairman of the university’s board of trustees, Dr. Hatem Allameh, affirmed that pluralism is a source of richness, and that the university’s role includes shaping the responsible citizen.
He explained that students are partners in the present and future of society, by turning knowledge into behavior and initiatives.
The meeting concluded with an open discussion that supported continuing the partnership between universities and civil society to spread a culture of nonviolence and local peace.
