International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said that “strong investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure are keeping global economic growth at around 3 percent.”
This comes as many Asian economies that supply the components and equipment needed for this technology, such as Thailand, reap significant benefits.
Georgieva made the remarks during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
She said the boom in AI investment represents “a demand shock and an investment shock” that could boost economic growth in the region’s advanced economies by between 0.5 and 1 full percentage point.
In emerging Asian economies, the boost could range between 0.2 and 0.8 percentage points.
She emphasized that “this shift to a higher growth pace is what is keeping the global economy growing at around 3 percent,” despite the pressures stemming from the energy supply shock weighing on the global economy.
