American star Olivia Rodrigo has revealed an unexpected piece of advice singer Chappell Roan gave her after hearing her wild and shocking stories about her relationships with men.
During an interview the two stars gave to broadcaster Zane Lowe on Apple Music on Thursday, October 15, to discuss their new collaboration on the song “Expectations,” 23-year-old Rodrigo recalled a funny moment the pair shared in the recording studio.
“I remember so clearly being in the studio trying to write the second verse of the song, and I was telling you, Chappell, all the crazy things guys had done to me,” Rodrigo said.
She added, laughing: “And you said to me, ‘Oh my god, you need to start dating girls! This is insane! Things have gotten way too weird.'”
A musical collaboration brings together Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan
On October 15, Rodrigo and Roan released a remix of “Expectations,” a track that originally appeared on Rodrigo’s latest album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.”
The two stars also released a music video for the song, a musical collaboration that has drawn significant attention from their fans.
During the interview, Rodrigo explained that from the start she wanted to write a song that felt like a personal motto or motivational phrase she could repeat to herself constantly.
“I felt like a lot of my songs are about expressing my feelings, but this time I wanted to write a song I’d want to sing every night,” she said.
She cited a song by rapper Kendrick Lamar that includes the line “sit down, be humble,” noting that some musical phrases have an exceptional ability to stick in people’s memory.
Chappell Roan as a source of inspiration for Rodrigo
Rodrigo said that Chappell Roan’s personality and self-confidence were a major source of inspiration while writing the song.
“When I made this song, I drew a lot of inspiration from Chappell, from her bold personality and her huge self-confidence,” she said.
She added that Roan’s agreement to take part in the project felt like “a dream come true.”
For her part, Roan expressed her happiness about being part of the project, especially since the song allowed her to deliver a verse that clearly reflects a queer romantic experience.
“I don’t know if everyone would be okay with including a whole verse in their song about a queer romantic experience,” she said.
Addressing Rodrigo, she added: “I think that reflects a lot of your support for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the spirit of pop stars. To me, this project carries a clear feminist spirit, and that’s exactly like you.”
A new artistic milestone for both stars
The “Expectations” remix marks Chappell Roan’s first appearance as a featured guest on another artist’s song, and it is also her latest release since “The Subway,” which came out in 2025.
As for Olivia Rodrigo, she released her latest album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” in June 2026, and it achieved notable commercial success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart.
This collaboration reflects the artistic bond between the two stars, blending Roan’s bold personality with Rodrigo’s signature emotional style, in a project that celebrates self-confidence and the free expression of feelings and personal experiences.
