Queiroz departs Ghana after disappointing results

Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has announced his departure from Ghana’s national football team, ending a five-month stint marked by disappointing results.

The coach and the Ghana Football Association agreed to end their professional relationship, putting the national team’s interests above all else.

In a farewell message published on the Ghana Football Association’s website, Queiroz explained that the decision was not an easy one.

He noted that the conditions necessary for the job were not fully available, while recent results also contributed to ending his tenure.

Two losses hasten Queiroz’s exit
Queiroz’s departure came after Ghana lost 4-2 to Gambia on home soil in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The team had also lost 0-2 to Côte d’Ivoire, leaving them at the bottom of Group C without a single point after two matches.

Over seven matches, the Portuguese coach secured one win and two draws, against four losses.

Ghana’s national team scored five goals while conceding ten, a record reflecting the difficulty of this phase.

A short stint with the “Black Stars”
Queiroz, 73, began his assignment in April on a four-month contract to lead Ghana at the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The “Black Stars” reached the round of 32 before being eliminated by Colombia.

After his mission concluded following the tournament, the Ghana Football Association reappointed him on September 2 to lead the next phase.

However, the two recent losses hastened the end of this spell, with the coach leaving his post shortly after his assignment was renewed, amid challenges facing the national team in its continental journey.
