China’s passenger car exports jumped 64% in September compared with the same month in 2025.
This growth comes as companies turn to overseas markets to offset a slowdown in domestic demand.
The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers announced that passenger car exports reached about 919,000 units during the month.
Overseas demand for fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles drove this increase, as Chinese companies expand their global presence.
Passenger car exports also rose by more than 70% during the first nine months of 2026, compared with the same period last year, according to the Associated Press.
By contrast, domestic sales fell 27% in September, reaching just over 1.6 million vehicles.
These results reflected weak consumer confidence and reduced government support, after the market saw a decline during most months of the year.
To boost Chinese car exports, companies have intensified their efforts in Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa.
Canada has also begun opening its markets to Chinese electric vehicles, under an agreement with Beijing to lower tariffs.
Amid this expansion, consulting firm AlixPartners and analysts expect Chinese companies’ exports to reach around 10 million vehicles during 2026.
These forecasts highlight the importance of overseas markets in driving the sector’s growth, as companies face ongoing pressure in the domestic market and seek to offset declining sales by increasing exports.
