The University of Buenos Aires has awarded Argentine star Lionel Messi an honorary doctorate in recognition of his sporting career.
The honor came just hours before his final international match with Argentina’s national team against Benin.
The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward is preparing to close out an international career spanning more than 20 years, after announcing his retirement from international football on August 31.
Upon receiving the degree, Messi said: “Thank you so much for this wonderful honor, because it recognizes everything I have given to sport. Receiving this degree is amazing.”
The Argentina captain also spoke about his feelings ahead of his farewell match.
“It’s a special day for me. I know I’m going through extremely difficult moments. I’ll try to enjoy the moment. I’m calm, but the closer the match gets, the more nervous I feel,” he said.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star added: “Starting the day this way, with this honor, makes it even more special. So thank you all very much, and my warmest greetings to you.”
