MTV announced the nominations for the 2026 VMAs, thehttps://vote.mtv.com/, in what looks to be a highly competitive edition featuring the world’s top music stars.

Madonna topped the list with 11 nominations, while Taylor Swift came in second with 9 nominations.

The nominations reveal a strong female presence this year. They also set the stage for a notable competition in a number of major categories, most notably Artist of the Year and Video of the Year.

Madonna Leads the 2026 VMAs Nominations

Alongside Madonna and Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each earned seven nominations.

Bruno Mars, Zara Larsson, and the Pink Panthers each received five nominations. Liza,

a member of BLACKPINK, received four nominations, while Shakira and Tate McRae each received three nominations.

This distribution reflects the level of competition at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, especially with the presence of artists who combine long-standing experience with recent successes.

Fierce Competition for Artist of the Year

The Artist of the Year category is one of the most competitive at the ceremony.

Competing for the award are Madonna, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Bruno Mars, and Morgan Wallen.

Consequently, this category will be the focus of significant attention, given the global popularity of the nominees and the work they have produced in recent times.

Who is competing for Video of the Year?

The Video of the Year category, in turn, features fierce competition, as it includes a selection of the most prominent music videos nominated for the 2026 VMAs.

The list includes:

  • Madonna for *Confessions II – The Film*.
  • Taylor Swift for *The Fate of Ophelia*.
  • Sabrina Carpenter for “Tears.”
  • Ariana Grande for *Hate That I Made You Love Me*.
  • Bruno Mars for *I Just Might*.
  • Gener8ion on *Storm Starring Yung Lean*.

This category is expected to be one of the most anticipated awards of the night.

The VMAs Return to Los Angeles

After a nine-year hiatus, the VMAs are returning to the West Coast of the United States.

It is scheduled to take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, 2026.

The show will last about two hours, though MTV has not yet revealed the host for this year’s edition.

The last ceremony held in Los Angeles was in 2017, when Katy Perry served as host.

The Return of the Best Dance Award

The 2026 edition will also mark the return of the Best Dance category after a seven-year hiatus.

The return of the award holds a striking irony for Madonna. Despite her long career and the fact that many of her works are closely tied to dance culture,

she has never won this award since its inception in 1989.

The 2026 VMAs Production Team

Gunpowder & Sky is producing this year’s show, with Van Toffler leading the team as executive producer.

Also serving as executive producers are Jesse Ignatovich, Barbara Bialkowski, Bruce Gilmer, Barry Barclay, and Flores Bauer, along with Melanie Block and Gary Lanfey.

With Madonna leading the 2026 VMA nominations and Taylor Swift hot on her heels, this year’s show looks set to deliver one of the most exciting musical showdowns yet.
